Coming soon: My tips for getting rid of the stuff that doesn’t make you happy.
Spoiler alert: I’m going to tell you “if it doesn’t make you happy, get rid of it.”
In the meantime, here’s a fun challenge:
During October, declutter items every single day. Here’s the catch:
On October 1st, choose one item to get rid of.
On October 2nd, choose two items to get rid of.
On October 3rd, choose three items to get rid of.
… you get the picture.
By October 31st, you will choose 31 items to purge. Add it all up, and you’ve gotten rid of 496 unnecessary things and you will feel like a #boss.
Show me your purges on Instagram using the hashtag #OctoberJunkChallenge
What to do with the things you declutter? Good question. Here are some ideas:
Sell – You spent good money on all that junk! You never know who might want to also spend good money on it! Consider listing it online (I’ve sold some weird stuff on Facebook) or have yourself a little yard sale!
Donate – This one can be tricky, because once you donate something, it might just end up in the trash anyway! Do some research and find a place to responsibly donate your treasures!
Trash – Unfortunately, sometimes when you are decluttering, all that junk ends up in the trash. It’s okay. Let it go. BUT… if you replace it after you’ve decluttered it, that’s not cool. The whole purpose of this task is to have less stuff. It’s uncomfortable at first to get rid of stuff. Don’t give in to the temptation to fill your house back up with junk!
